Scarlett Johansson Designs Handbag for Haiti Relief

Scarlett Johansson is the new face of Mango and has helped design an exclusive handbag to go on sale in more than 1,390 Mango stores worldwide in March. All profits from the Haiti Handbag will be donated to Oxfam’s Haiti Earthquake Response Fund.
The tote is emblazoned with an ancient map of the Caribbean country, with the message “Supporting the People of Haiti” written and signed by Johansson.
“I’m thrilled to be collaborating with Mango to benefit Oxfam. By purchasing this bag, you’re helping to provide life-saving assistance, like clean water, to the people of Haiti,” Johansson said. Recently Johansson auctioned an evening of her company to four fans to help benefit the relief effort as well.
The Haiti Handbag will retail for £16.90 (about $26.50 USD).

Nanai Salmon Leather: The Newest Exotic Skin

Alligator, python, ostrich…and salmon? Yes, what used to be a wasted byproduct of processing fish for eating is now the latest trend in exotic skins and fine leather. Salmon is as strong as cow’s leather but has the appeal and beautiful texture of something much more unique, plus it has an eco-friendly edge since it’s otherwise considered garbage. Nanai is the name of the company working out of Bavaria to produce the chrome-free, vegetable-tanned skins in a variety of colors for eager designers around the world.

Valentino 360 Embroidered Shoulder Bag, Handbag of the Day

I did a post recently on lace and its history and I would have loved to include this Valentino 360 Embroidered Shoulder bag as an example of how designers still love using lace today. Stone fabric overlaid with off-white straw floral embroidery make up the body of the bag while an oversized beige leather bow flaps over the top for a loose fold-over closure. There’s a leather stamped logo plaque on the back and on the satin-lined khaki interior, along with one interior zip pocket. Net-a-porter recommends it for rounding a neutral ensemble but I see it looking great paired with a rich red or green. $1,195

Gold Lotus Clutch, Handbag of the Day

Not an unheard of shape for a clutch but certainly not that common either, this Gold Lotus Clutch by Lotus Arts de Vivre is made of bamboo with reinforced decorative sterling silver corners. The lotus design is handpainted by a ‘celebrated Balinese artist’ (they don’t say who) and makes for a nice mix of gold pattern and silver hardware, which both contrast nicely against solid black. I personally love the way this bag looks but think it might be awkward to open and close if you’re the sort who gets into your handbag a lot. $950
